Top Tips for the Nationals (...not)
I thought I would give you all some of my secrets prior to the Nationals, I don't think there is that much time now for you to carry out the necessary tuning work but some of the suggestions are easily performed and could make a considerable difference to your boat speed and tactics : it has worked for Blue Tack, she has now won the last four races out of Llanbedr and Pensar YC, Shell Island YC and Pwllheli SC.
- Starting at the top, ensure that the mast rake is sufficient to enable the No 1 Genoa clew to jam in the fairlead roller, to achieve this slacken off the forestay bottle screw a couple of inches, if this adjustment is not available insert a shackle or two, then ease the forward lowers and cap shrouds, make sure the backstay tensioner is left on permanently in order to induce a banana shape to the elderly Pandora Hull, especially before crane out or when drying out against the wall. This shape reduces the wetted area and significantly increases potential hull speed.
- Ensure that all unnecessary equipment is stored in the bows of the boat, this includes of course the anchor and chain, engine, fenders, water, cooker, pots pans etc. also all the berth cushions can be dampened and bundled up to be squeezed up there keeping everything in place, this practise will make the boat point significantly higher especially in heavy weather, and combined with the faster hull shape achieved by (1) will really surprise you.
- Now for the underwater bit, this is a bit more difficult but not impossible, in order to keep a layer of water stationary ie attached to the hull, in order for the other molecules a bit further out to 'slip' by, it is essential that the anti fouling is really well roughened up and plenty of rough rusty type growths on the keel, which operates in denser water, so it is most important to have stationary molecules on this part of the boat, as indeed it is on the rudder.
- That's probably enough at this late stage although I suppose I should mention the crew, it is most important that they question every decision you make and delay their actions until you respond to their queries, they should also be able to write down the course incorrectly, (keeps you on your toes you know) and of course to add some excitement to the day, they must miss the ten minute gun.
Good luck to you all for the Nationals
